Soteria Resident Support Staff (Floater Position)

The Company: Pathways Vermont is a dynamic nonprofit agency which believes in transforming the lives of individuals experiencing mental health and other life challenges and permanently ending homelessness.  Soteria Vermont is a hospitalization prevention residence for individuals experiencing an early episode of psychosis who wish to avoid or minimize their exposure to medications. The residence is located in Burlington and has the capacity to serve up to five individuals at a given time.  Pathways offers a great benefit package including dental and health insurance, generous vacation time and 12 paid holidays.

The Role: Resident Support Staff is a member of the Soteria community which includes residents, Resident Support Staff, a Team Leader, Shift Supervisors, Soteria Services Manager, a nurse practitioner, and a holistic bodywork practitioner.  The position is focused on essential house functions and being with residents.

All Resident Support Staff are scheduled 35-39 hours per week. Staff are required to attend a weekly team meeting (one hour), co-reflection (one hour – various times offered), and supervision (one hour – variable to meet scheduling needs).

Full time floater position:

This position is scheduled Tuesday through Saturday. Tuesday half shift 8 am to 12 pm and Wednesday to Saturday full shifts 8 am to 4 pm. The floater position is expected to have flexibility to cover shifts earlier in the week as needed ( vacation , call outs etc.)  to ensure full staffing throughout the week. Time worked Sunday or Monday will be subtracted from the end of the week to maintain a 35 to 39 hour week.

Supervised by:  1st Shift Team Leader

Responsibilities:

  • Be with residents: non-judgmental, non-directive approach of providing support and availability
  • Engage in relationship building/rapport building with residents and provide service from a “choice” perspective as well as client centered, harm reduction, and strengths based approaches
  • Communicate to residents programmatic rules and expectations
  • Maintain thorough understanding of Soteria policies and procedures, including emergency protocol
  • Collaborate with residents in the formulation and review of a comprehensive care plan that is updated with the resident on a regular basis
  • Maintain written and computerized records, compile reports and complete other program documentation (including care notes, statistics, letters, petty cash receipts, etc.)
  • As requested by residents, provide one to one support with life skills and healthy choices, including but not limited to social skills, wellness, assistance with any medications and housekeeping
  • As requested by residents, assist residents to manage their monies, including assistance in computing expenses and preparing budgets
  • Coordinate, facilitate and monitor referrals to community services and activities, and advocate for resident participation
  • Regular household cleaning and maintenance
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication, writing, and computer skills
  • Ability to tolerate uncertainty
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to form relationships with marginalized individuals
  • Sound judgment and good problem solving skills including assessing risk factors
  • Ability to structure time, develop work priorities independently, and meet program expectations with regard to documentation
  • Ability to work weekends
  • Valid driver’s license, ability to drive vehicle and meet agency’s driving policy standards required
  • Ability to work effectively as part of the team
  • Ability to share one’s own personal transformative life experiences
  • Personal experience of psychosis/extreme states will be considered an asset

Working Conditions/Physical Demands:

  • Ability to ascend and descend stairs often required
  • Frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, standing and lifting of arms to participate in cleaning, cooking, space organization and other activities around the house
  • Often meeting with persons in the community and/or visiting different businesses
  • Occasional walking around the community to participate in activities with residents
  • Rarely running or moving at very swift speed to avoid emergency situation
  • Regular operation of a computer and other office machinery including frequent typing
  • Frequent talking and listening in participation of exchanging ideas through spoken word and occasional receipt and giving of detailed information through oral communication
  • Extensive reading responsibilities
  • Occasionally lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds (i.e. carrying groceries, moving things around the house, etc.)
  • Frequent exposure to outside environmental conditions (all seasons) in accompanying residents in the community and outings
  • Occasional exposure to high levels of noise
