A Movement for Mental Health in May

This May, during Mental Health Awareness Month, Vermont businesses are coming together to raise awareness and funds that will support our programs and services.

We are so thrilled to be partnering with some incredible local businesses that will host special events and promotions, with proceeds benefiting Pathways Vermont.

Please see below for a full list of participating businesses.

We also wanted to extend our sincerest appreciation to our current sponsors: Community Bank, The Kinney Drugs Foundation, National Life Group, Pacto Medical, Blind Tiger, University of Vermont Health, Joy of Home, NorthCountry Federal Credit Union, and Northwestern Medical Center. These wonderful sponsors are helping to shape this event, and we are so grateful for their support.

Where are they now?

Holiday Gift Baskets in 2017

Every journey is unique, and the stories of our alumni continue to inspire us every day. We recently chatted with Kristina, who shared some wonderful updates about her life since working at Pathways Vermont.

What are you up to these days?

I finished medical school at UVM in 2022 and then moved to NYC to do residency.

It was a big change, but I've learned so much and really liked learning more about serving urban vulnerable populations after my experiences with the challenges of rural vulnerable populations. There are a lot of differences, but also a lot of similarities!

I finished residency in July 2025 and am now finishing my fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Care. Once I graduate from my fellowship this summer, I'll be starting an inpatient palliative care job at Harlem Hospital, the only safety net hospital in Harlem and part of NYC's Health+Hospitals system.

What do you remember most from your time at Pathways?

Being in the community center! I loved spending time with the community members and staff. We did puzzles, talked about astrology, and had coffee and tea - it was so lovely!

Kristina and LuLu

Did anything from that experience stick with you or shape what you’re doing now?

Pathways has shaped so much of what I'm doing! Ever since being at Pathways, I knew I needed to work somewhere that serves vulnerable populations. That's why I took a job working at one of New York's public hospitals. During my fellowship year, I've been able to spend time with the SHOW van team at Bellevue Hospital, who provide medical care and support to patients experiencing street homelessness. I was also able to go to Riker's Island to learn more about healthcare in the carceral setting, and Bellevue's reentry clinic for individuals coming back into the community after incarceration. I've had the opportunity to do a case with the Medical Justice Alliance, which helps support medical parole for incarcerated patients with serious illnesses or who are nearing the end of life. I'm really passionate about improving the illness and end-of-life experience for patients experiencing homelessness and incarcerated/recently incarcerated patients. Pathways definitely ignited this passion in me, and it's continued through my medical training!

Is there a specific moment or connection you made at Pathways that still makes you smile?

There were a couple of community members I saw at the community center, and I also saw them once I was in medical school at our "Here to Help" clinic, which we held every month downtown. It was really nice to be able to continue those relationships even when I couldn't volunteer as much.

Any advice for current staff?

Try to keep your compassion and ability to see the good in people wherever you go! It can be hard sometimes in our current world, but my time at Pathways really reminds me to stay committed to this.

What’s something outside of work that’s bringing you joy?

My partner, Zak, and my 10-year-old dog, LuLu! I adopted LuLu as a 1-year-old when I was volunteering at the community center. Time flies!
