The House and Team Behind Soteria Vermont

We are proud to share a walkthrough of our new permanent home for Soteria!

Soteria is located in the heart of Burlington and is a Therapeutic Community Residence designed to be an alternative to hospitalization for individuals experiencing a distressing extreme state, commonly referred to as psychosis. It is a temporary residential stay averaging 90 to 120 days.

Soteria Vermont opened in 2015 and is among the longest-standing continuously operating Soteria programs in the world and the longest-standing program in U.S. history.

This program would not operate without the incredible staff who show up every day with compassion and curiosity and support Soteria residents navigating their experience with an extreme mental health state.

The team recently gathered for a team retreat and spent the day at Leddy Beach enjoying sandwiches, playing lawn games, and tie-dyeing tote bags and shirts. We are grateful for their passion and dedication to this work and our community.

Follow the button below to get a closer look at the beautiful space at Soteria and the team who makes this work possible.

Gratitude for the United Way NWVT & Bombas

A special shoutout to the United Way of Northwest Vermont and Bombas socks for donating hundreds of socks to support participants working with Pathways Vermont!

Many of these socks will support our Rural Outreach Team, which provides essential services to help individuals experiencing homelessness stay safe and connected.

The team connects individuals experiencing homelessness to essential resources and services, such as getting on housing voucher lists, connecting with primary care doctors, accessing mental health support, and benefits coordination.

Rosewood Cottage Peer Respite Highlight

Rosewood Cottage is a free, voluntary, short-term, overnight program that provides community-based emotional support and crisis relief in a home-like environment.

The program is available to all Vermonters 18 and over, including those who have never utilized mental health services and individuals who have multiple experiences of hospitalization for mental health.

Rosewood Cottage is a residence for individuals seeking a break from their daily lives and a space for respite and self-care.

Someone might stay at Rosewood for various mental health and wellness needs when they feel that the gravity of their experience requires a retreat. The team at Rosewood Cottage is available 24/7 and ready to support you or your loved one.

Meet Lauren and Zoe

L to R: Lauren, Zoe

Meet Lauren and Zoe, our Northern Vermont Department of Corrections Housing Team!

Lauren has been with Pathways Vermont for more than 10 years and has worked in several roles within our Permanent Supportive Housing program. She now serves as Team Lead.

Zoe previously spent three years as a Service Coordinator before leaving for graduate school, and we were lucky enough to welcome her back about six months ago.

When they’re not working, Lauren loves spending time with family, being on the lake, camping, gardening, and binge-watching Bravo.

Zoe is most likely reading, camping, cooking, trying new foods, or swimming.

What does their team do?

Lauren and Zoe work with people in Chittenden, Franklin, Washington, and Addison counties who are supervised by the Department of Corrections and need support finding and maintaining housing.

No two days look quite the same. They might help someone complete housing applications, connect with community resources, get to an appointment, shop for groceries, or simply sit down together and talk through what is happening in their life. The support looks different for each person, but the goal is the same: helping people maintain housing, work toward a permanent home, and navigate the challenges along the way.

Zoe on why this work matters:

"Supported housing as a model is so important, and I wish people understood its value in strengthening our community overall, particularly among the Department of Corrections population. My dream is to keep building this program to a level of success that convinces others this model is worth investing in. Any time I hear people say, “You are the first person who has ever cared,” or “No one has ever helped me with anything before,” I am reminded why this feels so important. It is such a privilege to be trusted and to support people in a way they have always deserved but haven't always had the chance to experience."

Lauren on relationship-centered support:

"I really like working with people where they are at, both physically in the community and mentally/emotionally. I appreciate that Pathways staff don’t take an approach of telling people what to do, but support them in making the decisions they feel are best for them. This doesn’t mean just letting people do what they want. This can look like having hard conversations about what different outcomes may be based on someone's choices, or being honest about the consequences certain decisions may have for their goals. I like that we can hold space for people to make decisions for themselves even if I would have made a different one."

Cocktails with a Cause at Waterworks

We’re excited to be Waterworks’ Cocktails with a Cause partner for the month of September!

All month long, Waterworks in Winooski will donate $1 from every specialty cocktail and mocktail sold to Pathways Vermont.

So if you’re headed out for a drink, dinner, or a night with friends in September, stop by Waterworks, raise a glass (with or without alcohol!), and support Pathways Vermont.

Welcoming Vermonters Home This Summer

Our Permanent Supportive Housing staff across the state made a big impact in July and August.

13 Vermonters from Chittenden County all the way down to Bennington County moved into permanent homes, thanks to the hard work and dedication of our housing teams.

August at the Lazy Goat Tavern

A special shoutout to the Lazy Goat Tavern at the Essex Resort and Spa, which supported Pathways all month long with their Cocktails for Change program.

$1 from every Pathways mocktail and mojito sold directly benefits participants in our statewide programs.

Creating change can't be done alone, and we are so grateful to our community for helping make an impact in the lives of those we serve!

Thank you, Mascoma Bank

A heartfelt thank you to Mascoma Bank for awarding Pathways Vermont grant funding to support our Permanent Supportive Housing program!

This funding helps us provide essential move-in kits, which make the difference between moving someone into an apartment and welcoming them into a home.

Thank you, Mascoma Bank, for helping us welcome home our neighbors across the state.
