Training – Conversations About Privilege & Oppression (Sold Out)

August 13, 2024 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

As peer support workers, we are sometimes faced with difficult conversations around oppression and privilege. We may encounter a service recipient who expresses racist or misogynistic worldviews. A co-worker may make a homophobic or transphobic remark. We may encounter sanist and ableist ideologies within the mental health system. We may even face our own implicit biases.

This participatory workshop is intended to support ourselves, fellow staff, and service recipients to engage in conversations about oppression and privilege. We’ll spend time unpacking oppression, privilege, and bias, then consider why, when, and how to respond. Through sharing personal stories, opening up dialogue, and practicing difficult conversations, we will educate and support each other to engage in conversations consistent with anti-bias values.

This training will be held virtually via zoom. We recommend that folks join via laptop, desktop, or tablet as smart phones are harder to navigate for this kind of interactive training.

This training is for folks who live and/or work in Vermont. This training is free of charge to participants and sponsored by Vermont’s Peer Workforce Development Initiative.
