Joseph grew up in Wardsboro, Vermont. He describes himself as shy and passionate about music, hiking, and photography. Over the years, Joseph has amassed an impressive collection of instruments, including 11 guitars and one bass.
After being incarcerated for eight years, Joseph began working with Pathways Vermont’s Department of Corrections program in 2016.
“When I started working with Pathways, I honestly didn’t really want to do anything,” Joseph shared. “I struggled with weight and other things, but I started working with Cheryl and other staff members who had similar interests. It was nice having support.”
Joseph worked with Pathways staff to acclimate into his apartment. “That first night in my apartment, I didn’t really sleep. It felt empty, and everything echoed. I spent a lot of time in my bedroom on my bed since that was what I was used to during incarceration. It definitely took some getting used to,” Joseph reflected.
Since then, Joseph has continued to receive support from Pathways. “Pathways has helped me with grocery shopping, going to appointments, transportation, and emotional support. It’s more comfortable having support in appointments and similar spaces.”
Today, Joseph lives with his one-year-old husky named Butters and looks forward to honing his photography and writing skills, going on more hikes, and exploring. Reflecting on his experience with Pathways, he says, “Everyone at Pathways has been very caring and supportive. Pathways really works for me.”
